UTF-8 BOMEnable if Excel shows garbled characters when opening the CSV

About this tool

Excel to CSV converts .xlsx files to UTF-8 CSV. If the workbook has several tabs, you pick which sheet to export. Your values come through intact, and the output is written as UTF-8 so accented characters and symbols survive the trip.

Shopify imports CSV, not Excel, and CSVs saved from Excel on some systems use an encoding that garbles characters like é, ñ, and £. Converting here guarantees UTF-8, which is what prevents that corruption on import. Already have a file with garbled characters? The CSV encoding fixer repairs them.

How to use it

  1. Upload your Excel fileAdd a .xlsx workbook. If it has more than one sheet, buttons appear so you can choose one.
  2. Toggle UTF-8 BOM if neededTurn on the BOM option when you plan to open the CSV in Excel, so it reads the encoding correctly instead of showing garbled text.
  3. Download the CSVGet a UTF-8 encoded CSV with your rows and columns preserved, ready for Shopify's import.

Frequently asked questions

Why does UTF-8 encoding matter for Shopify?
UTF-8 is the encoding Shopify expects. CSVs saved in other encodings can turn accented letters and currency symbols into garbled characters after import. This tool always writes UTF-8.
My workbook has several tabs. Can I choose which one to convert?
Yes. When a file has more than one sheet, the tool lists them and you pick the one to export. You do not need to split the workbook first.
The CSV looks garbled when I open it in Excel. What fixes it?
Excel does not always detect UTF-8 on its own. Switch on the UTF-8 BOM toggle before downloading, which adds the marker Excel uses to read the encoding correctly.
